Traps

Imagine you are walking in the woods and you see a small dog sitting by a tree. As you approach it, it suddenly lunges at you, teeth bared. You are frightened and angry. But then you notice that one of its legs is caught in a trap. Immediately your mood shifts from anger to concern: You see that the dog’s aggression is coming from a place of vulnerability and pain. This applies to all of us. When we behave in hurtful ways, it is because we are caught in some kind of trap. The more we look through the eyes of wisdom at ourselves and one another, the more we cultivate a compassionate heart.

Is The Law Of Attraction Real?

Do you have questions about the effectiveness of the Law of Attraction? Thoughts on the Law of Attraction     You are what you think. Most people don’t realize how powerful thoughts are and how each thought has its own unique energy signature. You’re a magnetic energy being – so that when you have a thought – it’s immediately lodged in your magnetic field, which is more known as your aura. When that thought remains in this field for any length of time, it often radiates out and projected into the Universe. It’s easy to imagine what’s likely to happen to someone who constantly fears certain things will happen in their life. They’re consciously thinking about it, dwelling on it, obsessing on it, feeding their precious energy into it. The net result is that they end up sending that stream of fear-based thought out into the universe. It’s like they’re holding up a sign above their head with a giant arrow saying: “Hey, come to me!” So, it usually does. Then you’ll hear them say: “I knew this was going to happen!” It’s not rocket science to see that ‘we attract what we vibrate.’ It’s all about the frequency! You’ve heard the saying: like attracts like – well it’s more about frequency attracting the same frequency. Everything is energy, which includes you and me. Since we’re energy, it’s we will tune into and attract the same frequency that we resonate. So, it goes without saying that If you’re afraid – you’ll attract fear; if you’re kind – you’ll attract kindness; when you’re grateful – you’ll attract prosperity. As we think, we begin to feel. As we feel, we vibrate. When we vibrate, we start to attract. So remember, you’ll attract exactly what you’re resonating. I was always aware of how…

Glastonbury Festival Bans Sale of Single-Use Plastics to Reduce Litter

The UK’s annual Glastonbury Festival draws over 135,000 people each year. As with many events of that size, garbage left behind after everyone goes home has become a serious concern. In previous years, Glastonbury has attempted to encourage a “leave no trace” ethos, hoping that attendees would willingly pick up after themselves. However, the problem has not improved with trashing littering the grounds after the end of every festival.

It is estimated that over £780,000 ($1,032,408 USD) is spent cleaning up trash after the festival each year.

Moving forward, event organizers are doing away with single-use plastic altogether in an attempt to get control of the problem. Attendees will be allowed to bring plastic bottles into the festival, but plastic bottles will no longer be sold on-site.

A statement posted on the Glastonbury Festival Facebook page reads:

For the first time, single-use plastic drinks bottles will not be available to purchase at this year’s Glastonbury Festival. They will also no longer be supplied or available in any of the Festival’s backstage, production, catering and dressing room areas. Our partners Greenpeace estimate that, globally, up to 12.7 million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans each year. Greenpeace advise that by far the best way to avoid plastic pollution is to reduce plastic usage. With more than one million plastic bottles sold at Glastonbury 2017, we feel that stopping their sale is the only way forward.”

The statement also said that the festival will be providing free drinking water, so attendees will be able to refill reusable bottles instead of using multiple single-use plastic bottles.

The statement continued:

“For those wishing to drink water – which we certainly do recommend! – we are, once again, encouraging all Festival-goers to use a reusable water bottle and refill it at any of the hundreds of free water taps around the Glastonbury site. We have a mains water supply from Bristol Water, with water of the same quality as your taps at home. We are also tripling the number of WaterAid kiosks where you will be able to refill your bottle. Free drinking water will be available from all bars across the site. Meanwhile, canned soft drinks and canned water will be available to purchase from all traders who previously sold soft drinks in plastic bottles. Although those coming to Glastonbury 2019 will not be prevented from bringing plastic bottles on to the site, we strongly encourage everyone to join the effort by bringing as little single-use plastic as possible.”

Emily Eavis, co-organizer of the Glastonbury Festival, hopes that these new measures will help to keep the festival grounds clean.

“It’s paramount for our planet that we all reduce our plastic consumption, and I’m thrilled that, together, we’ll be able to prevent over a million single-use plastic bottles from being used at this year’s Festival. I really hope that everyone – from ticket-holder to headliner – will leave Worthy Farm this year knowing that even small, everyday changes can make a real difference. It’s now or never,” Eavis says.

Despite these drastic measures, there are still many other litter concerns that are not covered by these policies, namely, the thousands of tents that are left behind by festival attendees each year. Festival organizers estimate that 11 tonnes (24,250.8 pounds) of clothes and camping gear were abandoned in 2015 alone. According to Somerset Live, that figure includes 6,500 sleeping bags, 5,500 tents, 3,500 airbeds, 2,200 chairs, 950 rolled mats, and 400 gazebos.

New England Clam Chowder

New England Clam Chowder

I’m sorry, did you see this? It’s freakin’ New England Clam Chowder. CLAM CHOWDER! Gah! When ever I say the words “Clam Chowder”, two things happen: 1. I have to immediately quote Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and say, “Password?”, “New England Clam Chowder”, “Is that the red or the white?”, “Damn I can never remember that!” and then 2. I immediately start thinking of thick creamy soup inside of a warm soft bread bowl. Yes, I said the “B” word. Don’t worry though because you are about to be so happy that you took time out of your day to read this blog post. Mostly for the Ace Ventura memories, but mainly because I’m giving you this New England Clam Chowder recipe AND telling you where you can get a Paleo Bread Bowl recipe to go with it. Go ahead, love me. Actually, you should probably just pass Go, do not collect $200, and go straight to loving my girl Simone Miller of Zenbelly! This recipe is from her AMAZING new book, Paleo Soups & Stews: Over 100 Delectable Recipes for Every Season, Course, and Occasion. Is your mouth already watering? Mine is.

So I actually first met Simone from Zenbelly last September when I was on book tour with Juli from PaleOMG. Simone came out to our San Francisco signing with Diane Sanfilippo (Balanced Bites/Practical Paleo). We all got together to eat tacos before the signing at Mamacita in San Francisco. I sat next to Simone and we had great conversation about how much tacos rule, how much booze rules, and I asked her all kinds of questions about her really cool catering business. She runs Zenbelly, a completely Paleo and Gluten-Free catering company in San Francisco! How cool is that?!

Paleo Soups & Stews

Anyway I’m fascinated by Simone. All of her recipes are so grown up. Like she is the Anthony Bourdain to my Pioneer Woman. She’s like a real gourmet chef and stuff who knows how to play on the flavors in her food. I’m just over hear adding a whole bunch of butter to stuff. Simone makes amazing bread recipes too out of gluten-free and paleo ingredients. In fact there are a TON in her new book Paleo Soups & Stews. One in particular that I’ve really got my eye (mouth) on is her Jalapeño Cheddar Biscuit Recipe! I want to get Jal-up-en it’s business! They remind me of the Cheddar Bay Biscuits from Red Lobster. (Insert heart eye emoji here). Simone, if you’re reading this, PLEASE make a Cheddar Bay Biscuit recipe! The people have spoken.

So besides this New England Clam Chowder (Ace Ventura voice) and the Bread Bowl recipe that you NEED to make to go with it, check out what else you can find in Simone’s new book Paleo Soups & Stews: everything from refreshing cold soups like gazpacho and summer borscht to savory pureed soups like Moroccan carrot and wild mushroom bisque to hearty options like matzo ball soup and pork chile verde. It even includes dessert soups and cookies to pair them with, like roasted plum soup with cinnamon roll cookies and chocolate soup with graham cracker marshmallow dippers. Yes, do not adjust your screen, you read that right. CHOCOLATE SOUP! Confession time, sometimes I melt chocolate chips in a bowl and eat it like soup. Don’t judge. And don’t be like this Vanessa (Directv commercial voice), get Simone’s book and make the real deal…

You guys I really, really like this book. I think it’s got a ton of recipes that you’ll want to get into your weekly line up as well as recipes that you’ll want to have on hand for Holidays and special occasions. I’m always excited to see Simone’s new recipes when she posts them on Social Media. She has this Everything Dough on her website that you can use for ANYTHING, from Cinnamon Rolls to Burger Buns! Her breads excite me. I’m dying to make some Cinnamon Rolls from Simone’s Everything Dough topped with an Orange Icing Glaze like those bastard Pillsbury ones that you buy in the pop-cans. This blog post is starting to go down a strange and dark path…So I’ll just leave you here with this recipe for New England Clam Chowder and an astounding Two Whisks Up review from me for Simone’s new book!

Ingredients
  1. 3 pounds cherrystone, quahog, or littleneck clams, well rinsed
  2. 4 ounces thick-cut bacon, cut into small dice
  3. 1 medium leek, white part only, cleaned and sliced into quarter-moons (about 1 cup) (see Tip on page 38)
  4. 1 cup diced shallots (about
  5. 2 large)
  6. ½ cup diced celery (about
  7. 2 ribs)
  8. Pinch of salt
  9. 1 pound Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into small dice
  10. ½ teaspoon minced fresh thyme
  11. ½ cup white wine
  12. 1 tablespoon arrowroot starch
  13. 1 bay leaf
  14. 1 cup heavy cream or full-fat coconut milk
  15. 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley, plus extra for garnish
Directions
  1. In a large pot, bring 1 quart of water to a boil. Add the clams, cover, and cook for 5 to 10 minutes, until the clams open. Discard any clams that do not open. Transfer the clams to a rimmed baking sheet and set aside to cool. Strain the broth through a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth to catch any sediment. Reserve the broth.
  2. Once the clams are cool enough to handle, remove them from their shells and chop them into small pieces. Set aside.
  3. Rinse out the pot and return it to the stovetop over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook until crisp, about
  4. 10 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the bacon to a plate. Remove all but 2 tablespoons of the fat from the pot.
  5. Add the leek, shallots, and celery to the pot along with a pinch of salt and cook until softened, 7 to 8 minutes, stirring often.
  6. Add the potatoes and thyme and cook for another
  7. 3 minutes. Turn the heat up to high and add the wine. Cook for another couple of minutes, until the liquid has mostly evaporated. Add the arrowroot starch and cook for 1 minute more, stirring constantly.
  8. Pour in the reserved clam broth and add the bay leaf. Bring to a simmer and cook, partially covered, until the potatoes are tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Stir in the clams, cream, and half of the bacon and bring just to a simmer. Set aside at room temperature for up to an hour to allow the flavors to develop.
  9. To serve, reheat the soup and stir in the parsley. Garnish with additional minced parsley and the remaining bacon.
Notes
  1. Chef’s Tip: Rather not use wine? Swap the white wine for equal parts white wine vinegar and water.
  2. AIP Modification: Use celery root, parsnips, or turnips instead of potatoes, and use coconut milk instead of heavy cream.
  3. Lower-Carb Modification: Use celery root instead of potatoes.

Primally Pure Skincare

Primally Pure

So can we talk skincare for a second? I’m like insanely obsessed with Primally Pure Skincare. And not in like a “I’m trying to sell you something even though it actually sucks” way. I’m like literally obsessed. Primally Pure has not only taken over my bathroom, but my life. Let me just rewind for a second here. It all started with my hippyish friend Stacy (as most of my “better for you” personal care stuff usually does). Stacy is always the first one to jump on the stop washing your hair because shampoo is toxic, oil pulling, natural deodorant and charcoal toothpaste train. In fact she’s the conductor. She’s probably tried every natural deodorant out there, even that weird Crystal one they sell at Nordstrom. Why is Nordstrom selling deodorant?

Primally Pure//ap.lijit.com/www/delivery/fpi.js?z=365762&u=cleaneatingwithadirtymind1&width=468&height=60

I’ve had a rocky past with deodorant. First of all, I can’t spell it right, I always want to spell it deoderant and that’s not correct, as the little squiggly red line has just informed me. Second of all, it doesn’t work for me. I’ve tried all of it, women’s, men’s, extra strength, clinical strength, prescription strength, Febreeze, Raid, it just doesn’t work. I always still had that nice sharp pungent onion smell when I lifted my arms. Just what every lady wants to smell like. My boyfriend would even laugh and be like, “you stink!” I hated it. I remember buying different kinds of deodorant at the store to switch between because I thought my body would build up a tolerance to a particular brand. It was the pits. Literally.

Anyway Stacy No-Blog somehow convinced Juli (PaleOMG) to switch to natural deodorant and then on Book Tour, Juli convinced me to try it. I did so super reluctantly because I didn’t want to smell like onions and garlic when people came out to meet us on Book Tour, but *gasp* it actually worked. This was a different, non-Primally Pure brand that I had tried, and while it worked really well, it was super rough and grainy and almost uncomfortable to put on. It also started darkening my armpits, just what I always wanted. Was I ever going to win? Fast forward to my gal pal Caroline’s Book Release Party (Colorful Eats) which was actually like 2 years ago, so it feels weird to say fast forward to the past, but you get it. With Stacy as my date, she introduced me to Bethany the femme boss behind Primally Pure. Bethany is literally the cutest thing ever and absolutely gorgeous. I remember thinking, “Wow look at her skin, no wonder she runs a skincare company!” After chatting for a sec, Bethany was like, “I’m going to send you some stuff that you’re going to love.” New skincare stuff? Schweet! Stacy then proceeded to tell me that Bethany’s deodorant is the best one out there. I was like, “Yeah, whatever Stacy, let’s hit up the dessert table again.”

Primally Pure

So what Bethany ended up sending me has completely changed my life. She sent me her Deodorant (in Lemongrass scent, my favorite!), the Almond + Vanilla Body Butter and the Fancy Face Serum . I was so excited to try the deodorant since I’d heard such great things. I put it on, and I was in heaven! It was SO smooth and felt amazing. No more grainy sandpaper texture. Not only did the deodorant work, I haven’t smelled a day since. Like at all. Even through super tough Orangetheory and CrossFit workouts. Not only that, but I noticed I could go longer without wearing deodorant, like 2 days, and still not smelling. And my armpits didn’t darken! I’ve been using Primally Pure deodorant for over 2 years now, and I’ll never use another one as long as I live.

The other two skincare items Bethany sent me were also game changers. The Almond + Vanilla Body Butter, I could eat with a spoon! It smells so good and moisturizes my skin like nothing else! Fun fact, it also works as a natural mosquito repellent as I found out in the Caribbean last summer. We were at dinner outside near water and the place was swarming. I had applied my body butter before leaving that evening and I was the only one who didn’t get bit! It must be the tallow and coconut oil, it either repels the mosquitoes or they have a hard time breaking the oil barrier to get to the skin. Either way #winning!

Next up was the Fancy Face Serum, okay so what’s so fancy about it? It’s a pimple miracle! Seriously! If I have a breakout, all I do is rub a little bit of this stuff on it before I go to bed (a little goes a long way), and when I wake up the morning, poof it’s gone. If it’s a deeper, more hardcore zit, it may not be completely gone, but it’s pretty close, easy enough to cover with a little concealer and WAY better than it was before. Then when I apply it again the next night, it’s even more diminished in the morning. I seriously can’t live without this stuff!

Primally Pure

Since then I’ve become a huge mega fan of Primally Pure. in addition to the Deodorant, Almond + Vanilla Body Butter, and Fancy Face Serum, I use the Beauty Cream, Everything SprayGeranium Complexion Mist, Cleansing Oil, and Lip Balm (shout out to the Creamsicle flavor!). My skin has never felt or looked better and I feel great knowing that I’m not putting all these toxic crappy chemicals and ingredients in/on my body. And Stacy’s inner-hippy is so happy too!

I can’t tell you enough about how great this stuff is. You NEED to try it for yourself. When you end up loving it I won’t even tell you, “I told you so.” I promise. Not ready to dive in head first yet? The anti-hippy in me totally gets it. I recommend going with the Starter Kit. It’s only $48 and gives you smaller sizes of most of the things I mentioned above and it comes with a super cute canvas zipper bag! And who doesn’t want a super cute canvas zipper bag?! I have converted so many of my close friends, who are normal, non-paleo, non-hippy, Crest and drugstore shampoo using people, and they have become just as obsessed as I am. Try it for yourself, I promise you will not be disappointed.
